Martha Hipley is an artist who deals with niche cultural production and online identity. We met at the Hose and discovered that we have studios in the same building. She was the first person to apply for the Diner Residency.
We met at the Venus Diner on 23rd St. in Manhattan, and they didn’t have pound cake, so we ate cookies.
We talked about our obsessive exercise and lifestyle routines and the different subcultures we like to engage with. The point was brought up that this interest often originates as an ironic fixation and then transcends to sincerity.
Martha has an extensive history in engaging with online communities, so we chatted about her involvement with some early message boards, specifically one called Makeout Club.
Martha currently has a project where she paints hundreds of male model pictures she finds on Tumblr and publishes them under an assumed persona. She is also training her body for some upcoming endurance performances.
Tonight I hung out with Eric and we talked about art-making and obsession and the internet!
